about

It’s 1986, AAC Stadium, Dallas, Texas.
5’7” Spud Webb, the “Little Man of basketball” has silenced critics, commentators, team mates, pretty much everyone bar his hometown fans by making it to the last round of the NBA’s annual Slam Dunk Contest.
But more than that, he’s only one shot away from winning it. Beating current champion and NBA poster boy Dominique Wilkins.

The whole stadium shifts to the edge of their seat as Spud lines up for the shot. With an unassuming confidence he launches the ball ahead of him, bouncing it off the backboard, before running after it and taking off into the air. Time slows as he connects with the ball mid flight. Their union celebrated by a hundred thousand little flash bulbs going off in the seats all around him. A serenity falls over his face as he follows the arch destined to take him to glory. The ball blasts through the net, shocking time back into its natural rhythm.
The stadium erupts.
The 50s go up.
My brother and I race up to hit RWD and bask in the drama all over again.

I can’t count the number of times we watched that VHS. Spud’s story of defying the odds and not being defined by other people's expectations has been etched into my psyche. He helped shape who I am today. This is my ode to him. His struggle and his reward.
